Great Players

Wilhelm Steinitz: Born in Prague in 1836, Wilhelm Steinitz was the last of 13 children. Morphy's chess exploits in Europe inspired Steinitz, who began to play chess for money in Viennese coffee houses. In 1861, he represented Austria in a strong London tournament, and then settled in England. He is well remembered for his victories in 25 straight matches and for publishing theories that explained how to analyze the game.
